Sharjah is one of the biggest states in
UAE and a large number of people from all over the places come to Sharjah to work, for business, and a variety of other purposes. Sharjah International Airport is one of the major airports in the United Arab Emirates, which handles a large number of passengers daily.
The airport is located at about 13 km away from the
Sharjah city towards the south east direction. This is a huge facility, which covers about 3,593,390 sq. m. of area in total. In fact, Sharjah Airport is now the second largest airport in the Middle East in terms of cargo tonnage. According to the previous statistics available from the Airports Council International, the Sharjah Aviation Services has handled about 421,398 tonnes of cargo in 2009.
Airport Location
The
Sharjah International Airport acts as the primary operational base of Air Arabia, which is the low-budget air traveler in this area. The airport is located at about 15 km away from Dubai; however, with a hectic traffic it may take up to two hours for you to cover this 15 km at peak hours.
The Airport
The now existing Sharjah Airport was actually built in 1970s, which was inaugurated in January 1977. This airport replaced the existing RAF Sharjah, which was the one close to the city and was functional from 1932 onwards. This was the first airport in UAE and also the Cooperation Council for all the Arab States of Gulf coast, to be used by Imperial Airways.
The airport is located at an elevation of about 116 feet above sea level. The
airport has only one runway, which is designated to be 12/30 orientation with an asphalt surface, measuring 4,063 meters in length.
